girl's a tramp

today i was tramping (hence the strange title) around pulau ubin with my family.
we met this cute old couple who owned a humongous house and sold drinks at there gate.
they were really old.
like REALLY old.
the man was 80
his father had met the ex prime minister Goh Chok Tong.
their house was full of ancient things, like a picture of the old man's fathers grandparents.
and there was a family photo of when the old man's father was still alive.
there were more than 70 people in that photo. the old man himself was one of 9 children.
they spoke teochew so i had to rely on my father to translate, though i could catch certain words which sounded like badly mispronounced mandarin.
they were the only 2 left in that grandiose house, all their children had 'run away' to Singapore.
i felt really sad for them, because they were living in a house full of the past, and i couldn't help thinking that one day they would pass on and all those memories that they had so carefully hoarded and kept would be thrown out.
reminds me of the bible verse:
"Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moth and rust do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal." Matthew 6:19-20
